Two graduates have started transport planning internships at Beverley-based transport and traffic engineering specialists, Local Transport Projects (LTP).

This is the latest example of LTP providing career opportunities for graduates with an interest and expertise in transport and traffic engineering.

“Both are full of energy and enthusiasm and are gradually being introduced to the work we do here at LTP,” said Andy Mayo, director, “including familiarising themselves with the reports we produce, the training courses that we run and attending site visits with senior staff.

“This is an excellent opportunity, both for them to gain more experience in a potential career and for us to bring in new academic ideas, approaches and skills.”

Both graduates expect the internship to really enhance their career prospects.

“The internship is giving me a broad array of experience in transport planning, undertaking multiple different types of work such as Transport Statements and vehicle tracking,” said Eamonn Tuton, from East Yorkshire, who has just completed an MSc in following his undergraduate degree in geography.

Sam Lapish, from Hull, who joins the company after completing a degree in geography, said: “From general work such as report writing to more specialist skills such as AutoCAD and traffic modelling, it is already proving to be extremely beneficial and puts me in a great position to progress into this career.

“The LTP team have also all been extremely welcoming and we both feel as if we have fitted in well.”

LTP has a well-established track record in nurturing university and professional talent and last year gave a three-month internship to University of Hull student Christopher Wilkinson, from Durham, continuing a career development policy that has seen a string of graduates join the practice in recent years including from the University of Hull, Newcastle University, and the University of Liverpool.

Established in 2004, LTP is one of the UK’s leading independent transport practices, providing transport planning, traffic engineering and highway design services to local government, developers, health providers and the education sector.

The company, which last year took up prestigious new office space in Beverley’s Flemingate centre, supports a staff commitment to professional development and integrity, demonstrated through membership and active involvement with professional institutions.

These include: the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE), The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT), the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (CILT). LTP director Tony Kirby is currently president of the IHE.
