A powerful and emotive street performance drawing links between the slave trade and the repression of those living with a disability is taking place in Hull this Friday.

Slave to the Senses is a factual, contemporary and theatrical production performed by adults with learning difficulties.

The performance is told through drama, poetry and dance, with guest performances from Search for a Star Winner 2017 Casey Adams, Tre Amici Tenor Leroy Vickers, and local African musician and storyteller Hekima.

Following on from the huge success of their first show Senses of the Sea, Culture of 5 Hull’s Alive! present the second show in the trilogy, Slave to the Senses.

Each of the one-off shows performed by the theatre group are created, produced and performed by the students and staff of the 5 Senses Charity, which is an expressive arts and education centre for adults with learning disabilities based in Hull.

“Our students have created thought provoking pieces of abstract art which would not look out of place in a modern art gallery.”

Slave to the Senses is a free performance and takes place on Friday 15 September at 1pm in the Quarter Gardens, High Street, Hull, HU1 1PS.

“During our third season we have been celebrating Hull’s long and proud connection to freedom with a string of amazing events and exhibitions such as Bob and Roberta Smith’s Freedom of Expression Centre, LGBT50 and the Freedom Festival.

“Slave to the Senses is the latest event exploring the theme of freedom and yet another example showing that Hull 2017 is inclusive and gives the opportunity for anybody to get involved in this fantastic year.”

The final performance in the trilogy, We Are 5 Senses, takes place on Friday 17 November at the Freedom Centre in Preston Road.
