Plans to expand Kingswood retail park have been rejected by who say there are already ‘sufficient opportunities’ for retail.

Concerns had been raised by traders in Hull City centre who claimed that should Kingswood be expanded it would have a detrimental impact on their footfall and trade.

Following refusal of an application to extend Ashcombe Road Shops, part of the Kingswood development, Cllr Martin Mancey, portfolio holder with responsibility for planning, said:

“It is essential as a Council that we take bold decisions to ensure the city centre continues to thrive in the years ahead.”

“The decision to refuse the application has been made in accordance with the new local plan, which does not allocate this site for retail purposes given that there are already sufficient opportunities to meet these needs within the City Centre.”

Out of town retail parks are often blamed for damaging the local high streets though examples in nearby York prove that city centre and out of town retail can work perfectly side by side.

Had the application been approved the development would have created 250 jobs and seen millions of pounds invested in the area.

Close to Beverley Kingswood is a popular shopping destination and is home to some of the biggest retail and leisure brands.

Offering free parking, a cinema and soon a Nandos, the retail park is popular not just from Hull but also Beverley and the surrounding areas.

Shoppers say they are turning their back on the high street in Hull saying parking and the quality of retailers need to be addressed.

Developers, The Kier Group, say they will appeal against the decision as they look to enhance the out of town shopping experience at Kingswood.
