Opera North returns to The Deep next week with a series of music and movement sessions for the attraction’s youngest visitors and their parents.

Inspired by the fascinating marine environment to be found in Hull’s award-winning aquarium, the family workshops will take place at 11.30am, 1.30pm and 2.45pm on Tuesday 29 August, Thursday 31 August and Friday 1 September.

The 45-minute sessions have been specially designed to inspire babies, toddlers, young children, and accompanying adults, to explore movement and music through creative play.

In a friendly, informal environment, everyone will be encouraged to learn a selection of sea-themed action songs, have a go on some instruments, play games and enjoy music together. The workshops will be led by a professional artist.

Jacqui Cameron, Opera North Education Director, said:

“We always enjoy holding workshops at The Deep and it feels particularly special to be introducing the pleasure of making music to young children during Hull 2017 City of Culture.

“One of Opera North’s key aims is to make music accessible and to show just how much fun it can be for adults and children of all ages. These music and movement sessions are a great way for families to spend time together, singing and responding creatively to the world around them, while also enjoying a day out at one of the region’s main visitor attractions. We also hope it sparks a life-long connection with the arts for the children who attend.”

Entry to the workshops is £5 per child (excludes entry to The Deep) with one accompanying adult free of charge. Spaces are limited so early booking is advised at www.operanorth.co.uk

This year also marks Opera North’s return to large scale opera performance in Hull. After its performance of Turandot at City Hall in May, the Company will be back in the city at Hull New Theatre from 26-28 October with The Little Greats, a season of shorter operas including Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, Janáček’s Osud (Destiny) and Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti.

Opera North’s work with young and families in Yorkshire is funded by the Opera North Future Fund, The Whitaker Charitable Trust, The Charles & Elsie Sykes Trust, The Linden Charitable Trust, The Charles Brotherton Trust and the Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation.
