Olympic Legacy Celebrated At Sports Event

The sporting achievements of men and women who attend day services from across the East Riding have been celebrated at a three-day sports event.

The East Riding Legacy Games, which were first launched in 2012 to tie in with the London Olympics, saw competitors take part in a range of track and field events including athletics, wheelchair racing, Frisbee golf, and tennis ball throwing.

Boccia, New Age Bowls, New Age Kurling and football also featured in the event which has become a firm favourite in the day services social calendar.
Councillor , council portfolio holder for adult and carer services, said: “The East Riding Legacy Games is always such an inspirational event for everyone involved and shows that disability really is no obstacle to taking part in competitive sports. I am always impressed with the amount of energy, enthusiasm and talent on display.

“It is fantastic to not only see this event still going strong and keeping the Olympic legacy alive but to see it getting bigger and better every year. I congratulate everyone who took part in this year’s games.”

There was a fun and competitive atmosphere as teams representing day services in Haltemprice, Holderness, , Goole, Driffield, , and Pocklington went head to head with the support of the council’s sport, play arts service and day services staff.

Priory View Day Centre, Bridlington were the overall winning team, with Millers Day Centre, Beverley coming in second place and Haltemprice finishing third overall.

Michael Sampson, of Priory View, beat defending champion Matthew Green, of Millers to take gold in the tennis ball throwing competition.
Priory View were also victorious in the football tournament, Holderness Day services won gold in the Boccia contest, Millers took gold in the skittle contest and Pastures Day Centre, Goole enjoyed success in the art exhibition which ran throughout the event.

Members of Hull FC, accompanied by team mascot Airlee bird, presented the gold, silver and bronze medals at the closing ceremony which was followed by a celebratory disco.

Also showing their support were Hull UK City of Culture 2017 volunteers, and representatives from the Yorkshire County Cricket Club who were offering cricket taster sessions.

The games, were officially opened at , in Beverley by East Riding of Yorkshire Council chairman Councillor Caroline Fox.
