American artist Spencer Tunick and The Ferens’ Curator of Art, Kirsten Simister are just some of the guest speakers invited to take part in a fascinating symposium next month exploring the changing role of the nude in art.

The free event at Ferens Art Gallery on Thursday 10 August at 2pm will provide a forum for reflection especially for those who took part in the hugely successful Sea of Hull installation, that took place on 9 July 2016, when 3,200 people posing nude wearing nothing but blue body paint and officially became the UK’s largest ever nude installation.

The thought-provoking event organised with the input of Future Ferens young volunteers will explore how the Ferens SKIN exhibition, was conceived and will include a live Skype interview and Q&A session with artist Spencer Tunick. The event concludes with an engaging debate examining around the relationships between nudity and art.

Councillor , Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Tourism and Chair of Hull Culture & Leisure Limited, said:

“The Sea of Hull installation was a huge success and this event will enable you to find out more about how this incredible piece of work came to light, as well as offering an insight as to how the SKIN exhibition was curated and brought together, exploring the different artists and their responses to the naked body.”

SKIN is a dramatic exhibition of major works by Lucian Freud, Ron Mueck and Spencer Tunick, together with highlights from the gallery’s renowned permanent collection, the exhibition explores modern and contemporary artists’ responses to the human figure.

The event has been co-ordinated by Future Ferens, a group of young volunteers aged between 18 – 24, as part of an ongoing initiative to promote young people’s participation with the gallery.
