Mums and babies from across the East Riding are being invited to take part in events to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding and raise awareness of the support available.

Five Big Latch On events are being hosted by East Riding children’s centres, in partnership with the midwifery service and Humber Foundation NHS Trust health visiting service, as part of international celebrations to mark World Breastfeeding Week, August 1 to 7.

One of the main events in the East Riding will be at , near , which will become the first venue to be awarded ‘Breastfeeding Welcome’ status as part of a new scheme for

Bridlington identifying locations where mothers are welcome to breastfeed their babies.

The event at Sewerby Hall and Gardens will be held on Friday 4 August 2017, at 10.30am. Mothers and babies are invited to go along from 10am to take part in a synchronised breastfeeding event as part of the global Big Latch On.

Those wishing to take part are asked to register their place by contacting Bridlington children’s centres on 01262 409596 or 606053.

Participants are asked to meet next to the bandstand outside the Hall. There will be a variety of fun events taking place later in the day, including an outdoor play session ukulele workshop, and sea-side themed craft activities.

Big Latch On events will also be held at West Park in Goole, Flemingate shopping centre in Beverley, Withernsea Hospital Gardens and East Riding Leisure South Cave. The events will all be held on 4 August from 10am ready to take part at 10.30am.

There will be a free goody bag for the first 30 participants at each East Riding Big Latch On location.

Thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Global Big Latch On synchronised breastfeeding events, during World Breastfeeding Week.

East Riding children’s centres provide day-to-day support to encourage breastfeeding.

Councillor , East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for children, young people and education, said she hoped that mothers will take the opportunity to take their babies and young children along to one of the events.

“The Big Latch On provides an opportunity for breastfeeding women to get together in their local communities, host their own events and identify opportunities for on-going support,” she said.

Councillor , the council’s portfolio holder for leisure, tourism and culture, said:

“I am delighted that Sewerby Hall and Gardens is taking part in the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme, which means that all breastfeeding mums and their babies can be assured of a warm welcome.”
