A spectacular day of singing workshops and group performances is set to raise the roof at Hull City Hall on Saturday 15 July.
The Bigger Sing, part of the Hull UK City of Culture celebrations, will get underway from 9am, offering something for everyone from experienced singers to complete novices.
The special day will offer a range of genres including Gospel, Accafellas (for male voices), Singing for Peace & Freedom, Singing and Signing (BSL), and Beat Box Choir.
Aimed at adult singers, choirs or singing friends, participants will have the chance to choose the singing workshops on the day and will be led by some of the UK’s top singing leaders including international Beatboxer and Sound artist Jason Singh and award winning composer and choir leader Helen Yeomans together with the members of the amazing vocal group ‘Mouthful’.
Supported by Hull City Council Arts Development and Arts Council England, the Bigger Sing will include workshops led by: Jason Singh, Sharon Durant, Bex Mather, Katherine Zeserson, Dave Camlin, Michael Betteridge, Dr Paul Whittaker OBE, Em Whitfield Brooks and Ali Bullivent. Michael Betteridge will lead a site-specific outdoor performance, for massed singers in Queen Victoria Square.
Everyone will come together to sing a specially commissioned Sing to the Hills song, by award winning composer and choir leader, Helen Yeomans. Helen will lead a massed sing in the morning, while the extraordinary vocal quartet Mouthful will perform later in the day. A limited number of ‘busking’ slots for singing groups can be booked in advance.
Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture and Tourism and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said: “The day is part of the council’s Singing City initiative and the intention is to bring people together to sing and share an intensive day of song from Hull, East Riding and beyond.
“We are delighted that our City Arts team has secured some of the UK’s top vocal leaders who will be part of the special celebration of singing.”
