A new free exhibition at the Treasure House opens on Saturday 15 July – ‘Morning, Campers!’ is a nostalgic look at the history of the British holiday camp.

The first holiday camp appeared in 1894 on the Isle of Man. However, it was in the 1930s that Billy Butlin launched the concept of the holiday camp in a big way.

The holiday camp sector grew rapidly after the Second World War and dominated the British holiday scene through the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition celebrates this unique British institution.

‘Morning, Campers!” covers the early history of the holiday camp; the lives and careers of Billy Butlin, Harry Warner and Fred Pontin; the Golden Age of the holiday camp after the Second World War; Trade Union camps; the , food and dining on offer; the legendary live entertainment; and their eventual decline and change.

As well as panels, visitors will also see framed prints, original artefacts, games and activity sheets.
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for leisure, and culture, said: “This exhibition promises to be a real feast of nostalgia, looking back to the golden era of a great British holiday tradition. I am sure this will prove very popular!”

“Morning, Campers!” runs until Saturday 16 September, and is a touring exhibition by Emma Warren Exhibitions.
