In a true show of community spirit, families from Cherry Burton and beyond gathered at the Humber Bridge last weekend to take part in a sponsored bike ride across the bridge to raise vital funds for local charity Cherry Burton Pre-school.

Despite a ferocious wind, supporters of this local charity in ages ranging from one year old to 73 years old, battled across the bridge on bikes, trikes, scooters and on foot, to the finish line where they were greeted by family and friends. All the children who took part have been busy earning sponsorship for this challenge and will altogether have raised around £700 for the Pre-school.

To mark their achievement, participants were awarded medals and certificates and they were also rewarded with cake and refreshments afterwards.

Pre-school dad Jamie Elliott literally went the extra mile with his children Annie, Ashie and Oscar, cycling from the finish line to the start line and back again. He commented “We are so happy to be supporting this wonderful Pre-school. All three of my children have benefited from the outstanding education, care and the wonderful activities on offer. Taking part in this event and helping to raise much-needed money for the Pre-school is our way of giving something back and saying thank you.”

Sally Granger, Chair of the Pre-school committee, was thrilled that so many people turned out to support the Pre-school. “It is heartwarming to see so many families turning out to support us. Without their support, and without voluntary donations, we would struggle to offer such a diverse and exciting curriculum for the children, which we believe is a cornerstone of early years education.”

The Pre-school is continuing to go from strength to strength as increasing numbers of families choose to send their children to this setting, which was rated Outstanding by in all areas in February 2016. Pre-school Chair Sally is determined to spread the word even further, however, as Beverley’s increasing population puts pressure on school and nursery places in the town.

“Many people don’t realise how close Cherry Burton is to Beverley – around 3 miles away,” she continued. “We have an outstanding Pre-school and a brilliant primary school in Cherry Burton so we would encourage parents in Beverley and the surrounding area to come for a visit and consider us when choosing the best Pre-school and primary school for their children.”

The next fundraising event for the Pre-school is a family fun day and cricket match on Sunday 2nd July, which is run in association with the Cherry Burton Cricket Club. Proceeds from this event will be split between the Pre-school and the cricket club, which tragically lost its chairman in a road accident just weeks ago.
