Greens Say ‘First Past The Post Voting System Is Utterly Inadequate’

of has criticised the UK voting system saying it is utterly inadequate as he reflected on the 2017 General Election.

His comments comas the party as his party polled 525,371 votes nationally and won one seat, yet the Democratic Unionist Party polled just 292,316 votes winning, what will be 10 critical seats.

Summing up after an election that saw The Green Party finish last in the region Mr. Howarth said;

“This snap election was a ruthless attempt at a power grab, with the shortest possible timescale, preventing a fair and proper campaign – with insufficient time to organise a single public hustings in many constituencies like Beverley & Holderness, and sightings of Conservative candidates and their leader rare.”

“After the 2015 election had huge influence over British politics; likewise the Greens surged to a million votes in a cry for fairer, more progressive Green politics.”

“In 2017 we then saw many great Green Policies appear in the Labour manifesto, proving hugely popular in the face of some vitriolic media. UKIP collapsed in a rejection of their divisive politics of hate.”

“Politics has changed forever. Greens formed local alliances, or stood aside for progressives. And yet again our broken and outdated First Past The Post voting system is exposed as utterly inadequate for our modern multi-party democracy.”

“So many cast votes “holding their nose”, and voted for a party that was not their first choice, so desperate were they to vote against vicious and cruel Tory austerity.”

“So yes, the Green vote decreased, although our policies haven’t changed and remain popular, and despite a strong performance by our co-leaders.”

“Bizarrely absent though from this election was mention of the environment – as if climate change wasn’t happening at all.”

“Overall, progressive politics has won, and Greens played a huge part in that. Hope has won over fear, and we’re proud to have helped that happen.”

  1. The referendum we had 2 years ago was for the Alternative Vote system. Not a proper form of proportional representation.

    There are a number of hybrid forms of proportional representation that mean you still would retain the ability to vote for a particular local candidate, which is one of the criticisms often levelled at regional list based systems.

    We really need to fight for electoral reform so we can break the cycle of Labour, Conservative, Labour, Conservative, ad infinitum.
