The Treasure House in Beverley will host a fascinating talk on Thursday 15 June at 6.30pm, when guest speaker Paul Brunyee will explore the links between Beverley and the Battle of Waterloo.

The battle of Waterloo and the Peninsular War resulted in a tremendous outpouring of writing both in letters and diaries.

The East Riding is remarkable for having produced two of the most often quoted diarists in military history, George Simmons and Alexander Mercer. Paul Brunyee from the Waterloo Association will bring these stories to life with the aid of illustrations, letters, medals and antique weapons.

Paul is editor of The Waterloo Journal, as well as an active member of the Waterloo 200 Education Committee. He has recently contributed research towards the Waterloo200 National Army Museum website, worked in schools, and has also acted as a guide on the battlefield. His first book, ‘Napoleon’s Britons’, was published by the History Press in 2009. He is currently researching the role of the militia in 1790s England. He has also acted as an educational advisor to several museums and heritage groups.

Lizzy Baker from East Riding Archives said;

“This is an excellent opportunity to find our more about our Beverley and East Riding connections to one of the most famous battles in modern history”.

Tickets cost £5 and can be bought online at www.eastriding.gov.uk/events or by calling (01482) 392699 (Monday – Friday 9am-4pm) or visiting the Archives research room in the Treasure House.
