Friends of the Ferens, on behalf of Ferens Art Gallery, has today launched a crowd funding campaign to raise money to purchase a further piece of artwork from Spencer Tunick’s Sea of Hull installation for the city to keep forever.

Three of the unique Sea of Hull photographs have now joined the gallery’s permanent collection as part of the original commission and the Ferens has been offered the opportunity to add a fourth as a reminder of that unique day in Hull on 9 July 2016 which made worldwide headlines.

Participants and the public can vote for their preferred fourth image from a number of options that will be on display as part of the Skin exhibition which opens this week.

Councillor , Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture & Leisure, said:

“This was an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the city, gallery and participants, capturing the news all around the world. It is fantastic that visitors and participants have the chance to vote on their favourite image and contribute to making the decision on a final fourth image and is in keeping with the inclusive and participative nature of Spencer’s work. Any contribution is welcomed, large or small.”

Kirsten Simister, Curator of Art at Ferens Art Gallery, said:

“The Sea of Hull installation created an extraordinary spectacle that placed Hull in the global spotlight and one the gallery is proud to have commissioned. We now have this opportunity to involve the public again and would love to add a fourth piece of work to Hull’s permanent collection. The 15 possible images can be seen in a special viewing unit in Gallery 8 which adds an extra element of surprise and fun for visitors to the exhibition.”

You can donate to the crowd fund by visiting www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/Ferens-Hull. Alternatively the gallery will also be accepting donations in the special donation box within the SKIN exhibition.

The SKIN exhibition will be on display at the Ferens Art Gallery from Saturday 22 April and Sunday 13 August 2017.

Entry is free and open: Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 11am – 4.30pm. It is also open until 7.30pm every Thursday.
