Sewerby Social And In Focus - Two New Events At Sewerby Hall And Gardens

Sewerby Hall and Gardens has announced its programme of exhibitions for 2017.

Saturday 1 April will see the start of the first exhibition of the year – ‘Little Works of Art: 100 years of Greetings Cards’, which runs until Sunday 21 May.

Curator Janice Smith explains: “This charming exhibition launches our 2017 programme by exploring the history of greetings cards and postcards. It’s a touring exhibition, which looks at cards from the 1850s to the 1950s, especially those produced for , Easter, Valentine’s Day, and of course birthday cards.

“It’s fascinating to see how the approach to these occasions has changed through the decades, as illustrated on these cards.”

The summer exhibition for 2017 will be ‘Beside the Seaside’ (from 27 May until 10 September) which will celebrate the culture and the history of the good old traditional British resort known and loved by so many – Bridlington!

The third exhibition this year from 16 September until 26 November will be ‘Lark Rise’ – new interpretative illustrations to the classic work of English rural life, ‘Lark Rise to Candleford’, by wood engraver artist Sue Scullard, together with contemporary photographs (1880 – 1910) newly printed from the originals.

Councillor , portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said:

“In this year of Hull UK City of Culture 2017, I am delighted that we are once again able to put on such a varied and interesting exhibition programme at Sewerby Hall and Gardens. I am sure that the first exhibition on the history of greetings cards will prove fascinating.

“I hope lots of visitors will want to come and experience everything that Sewerby Hall and Gardens have to offer, from the house itself, restored to how it would have looked around 1910, to the zoo, the magnificent gardens, the café, and the play areas. And of course there is the remarkable programme of events throughout the year.”
