A debut try from Ryan Anson lit up Beverley ARLC first game in the Yorkshire Men’s League 40/20 cup.

A kick downfield by the visitors was fielded by Anson, who went on a run to the line beating countless defenders running from one corner of the pitch to another.

A youthful Skirlaugh ‘A’ team made the blue and golds work very hard for their points which began to flow in the final quarter of the game. commented;

“It is pleasing to get off to a winning start in your first competitive outing of the season but the zero figure in defence makes me smile.”

Beverley always looked the more likely scorers in a first half where both defences were on top. It was a story of missed chances for the home side. Lewis Poskitt’s gentle kick into the in-goal area had just too much on it for the chaser to get a hand on it in the 10th minute.

Jack Howdle got over the line with a flurry of defenders around him but lost control of the ball when stretching out to touch down. Then Alex Calvert’s break down the right flank saw his inside pass to the supporting Ben Naylor go to ground as the  line beckoned.

Ryan Davaney broke the deadlock on the half hour mark chipping ahead to regather and score after another sustained spell of pressure on the visitors line. Josh Poskitt converting. Shortly before the break the game boiled over as a fracas resulted in Ethan Cambridge somewhat unluckily spending ten minutes in sinbin as the referee attempted to cool both sides  down.

The second half continued to see Beverley pound the Skirlaugh line. Lewis Straw forced a line drop-out with the resulting attack again coming to nothing. It took until the 55th minute for the next score. The Beverley attack was stood very deep with seemingly the intention of shipping the ball out across one side of the park to another.

However an outrageous dummy from Lewis Poskitt totally foxed the opposition for him to ghost in beside the posts. This time Straw converted.  In the 65th minute the game was put beyond doubt when an interception from Lewis Straw saw him race 70 meters to score.

There then followed the breathtaking effort from Ryan Anson 8 minutes from time and right on the stroke of full time Josh Poskitt dived over in the corner as the Beverley turned the screw. Straw stroked over the touchline conversion.

The man of the match as voted by supporters and committee went to Billy Riby in a flawless display in attack and defence. He played a big part in the hosts keeping a clean sheet.
