BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is set to be one of the musical highlights of Hull UK City of Culture 2017 when it comes to Burton Constable in East Yorkshire on 27 and 28 May.
DJ Nick Grimshaw made the announcement that it would be coming to the area on this morning’s Radio 1 Breakfast Show.
It is expected to attract tens of thousands of music fans to Burton Constable, which has been the home of the Chichester-Constable family for over 700 years. The fine building with its surrounding parkland, already a popular visitor destination, will provide an impressive backdrop to one of the country’s biggest music events.
Martin Green, Director Hull UK City of Culture 2017, said: “We are thrilled that BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is coming to Hull for 2017. Bringing this major national event with some of the biggest names in the music industry is a massive coup for the city and confirms its growing international profile as THE place to be.
“As ever, events like this can only happen thanks to the different partners and other organisations working together, and we are delighted to be working closely with the National Heritage Memorial Fund appointed trustees and the family at Burton Constable, as well as our colleagues at Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council to ensure a successful event. Natural England and Historic England have also been crucial in providing support to bring this event to the area. “
Leader of Hull City Council, Stephen Brady said: “Radio 1’s Big Weekend is a major highlight in the UK festival calendar and to have it coming to our region is really a testament to the fantastic work done by the 2017 team, Hull City Council and our partners in the East Riding.
“After an incredibly good start to the year with thousands of people already visiting our great city, it is clear that we are well on the way to fulfilling our ambition to make Hull a world-class visitor destination.”
Councillor Stephen Parnaby OBE, Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled the East Riding has been chosen to host such a prestigious and popular event as BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend.
“This is another fantastic event coming to the East Riding thanks to our principal partnership with Hull UK City of Culture 2017.
“It will be an amazing opportunity to showcase the beauty and attractions of our area to a huge national audience, and the local economy will benefit from the thousands of visitors attending the festival. It will give younger people in our area the chance to see big, international music stars perform live on a local stage, and I’m excited to see who Radio 1 will be bringing to the East Riding.”
