Hull Music Service ‘Tell The World’ at The Royal Albert Hall

The Hull Music Service has been chosen as one of only three massed ensembles to perform at the Music for Youth Proms in November 2017 at the Royal Albert Hall.

This prestigious event on 15 November 2017 is a great opportunity to perform the piece ‘Tell the World,’ and showcase the city’s many talented young musicians during the city’s year as the UK City of Culture.

Musically the piece takes its inspiration from the work of Hull’s renowned poet Phillip Larkin ‘Here’ describing the city and the surrounding area with its ‘grain scattered streets, barge crowded water’ and ‘luminously peopled air’.

Around 700 young people from every Hull school, Sixth Form College and pupils from some special schools will take part in the performance and combining a range of musical styles, abilities and influences with a living composer developed especially for this event and performance space.

Including a wide range of musicians from all abilities the performance will feature a full orchestra, jazz big band, large percussion ensemble, brass ensemble, dancers and large choir plus additional massed brass, woodwind and string sections.

Councillor Phil Webster, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Learning, Skills and Safeguarding Children, said:

“The aim of the piece is to celebrate Hull, its landscape and cultural heritage, and also the potential of our next generation of musicians and unearthing future stars of the music world, and what they can achieve when given the opportunity.

“This project ties in perfectly with the final theme of the UK City of Culture programme entitled ‘Tell the World’ and will aim to bring something of this unique city to the Royal Albert Hall.”

“It is a fantastic opportunity for the Music Service and its students from all backgrounds and we are all delighted to have been selected by Music for Youth.

“This is very a prestigious event and will provide the chance to Tell the World about the talented young musicians in this city.

“It is going to be a huge undertaking for us, but a perfect opportunity for our more experienced musicians to work alongside and inspire their younger peers and be a part of something that celebrates what the young people in Hull can achieve.

“Our performance is all about celebrating Hull in all its diverse, eclectic and unique glory.”

We anticipate that many parents will travel to London on the day to share in this experience and the Hull Music Service will be encouraging this through subsidised transport and reduced cost tickets for the Royal Albert Hall.
