Beverley Make Light Work Of Selby At Beaver Park

Beverley RUFC enjoyed a good win as they beat Selby 29 – 3 at Beaver Park in match they never looked like losing on a bitterly cold and wet afternoon.

A spokes person for the club said;

“This was not a classic by any means and in truth Beverley should have won by more points such was their superiority.”

“Referee Adam Robson had a very good game under difficult circumstances and the entire Beverley front row were singled out by head coach Will Turnball as men of the match for Beverley.”

Beverley kicked off into the cold wind and immediately set what was to be the pattern of the day.

Beverley camped in the Selby 22 and after three minutes took the lead with a well worked try out on the left wing from full back Rob Smith.

A long period of pressure finally, after many phases, lead to a try from left wing Luke Hazell, but the kick was too wide for Phil Duboulay to convert.

Beverley continued to dominate and Selby were becoming increasingly frustrated conceding far too many penalties.

Eventually they gained a little respite with a long range penalty themselves to reduce the deficit to 7 points though Beavers looked very comfortable.

The second half continued with Beverley applying all the pressure a Selby resorted to spoiling the game incurring penalty after penalty.

What was very satisfying for Beverley was the solid performance of the front row  which has been an area of some concern. The pack looked solid throughout and young Niall Caruthers

making his first team debut in the starting line-up played well as a result.

Eventually the pressure told and Barney Carter touched down for a pushover try

which Duboulay converted to make it 17 – 3. This was followed almost immediately by another pushover try from Dave Brant.

In the final minutes of the game Beverley pressed again and were awarded a penalty try as they were about to score their third pushover in as many minutes capping off what was a good afternoon for the Beavers.
