Strong Campaign Sees Denis Healy Elected To East Riding Council

Dennis Healy walked to victory in the St Mary’s Ward by-election as the Lib Dems gained a seat from the Conservatives at County Hall.

Commenting on his election Mr. Healy said;

“I am obviously delighted by the result and I promise to work hard for all residents, regardless of whether or not they supported me.”

“This is a huge victory, it shows the Lib Dems are back and winning seats in the East Riding, Hull and across the country.”

“This is a mandate for real change, and I am committed  to making sure that the views of residents are taken into account in County Hall.”

“The result will ensure a stronger opposition on the Council, standing up for local residents.”

With turnout of just over 29pc Healy returned some 1,497 votes, 500 more than second placed Roy Begg from .

In the run up to the election Mr. Healy was criticised by some for his extensive marketing campaign that continued right up until minutes before the polls closed.

His efforts proved to be deciding factor for a number of voters with Mr. Healy saying he can only apologise.

He said;

“I had a message from someone who was angry with me for posting flyers to him but I apologised and we had a good conversation.”

Commenting on his campaign Mr. Healy added that many people had told they would vote for him as he was putting so much effort into his campaign.

Previously held by the Conservative Party Mr. Healy will be the first Lib Dem to represent St Mary’s Ward since John Bird lost his seat some 6 years ago.

Now appointed Mr. Healy says he will put as much effort into his role as a Councillor as he did his campaign confirming there is at least one more news bulletin in the pipeline.

The Beverley Party: 364
Independent: 141
