Halloween Fun With A Victorian Twist At The Treasure House

Halloween Fun With A Victorian Twist At The Treasure House

There will be a Hallowe’en crafts activity day for children and their families at the in Beverley.

The free drop-in event takes place on Saturday 29 October from 10am to 3pm in the rooms on the first floor of the Treasure House, fearing crafts and ghost stories.

The Hallowe’en craft activities will have a light-hearted, Victorian gothic twist. A choice of making and exploring activities will provide something for children of all ages, including those under 5.

This event is inspired by the exhibition at the Treasure House about Mary Elizabeth Braddon, the Victorian writer and actress who lived in Beverley for a time.

Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s lifestyle and work caused much scandal in Victorian Britain. She wrote popular novels known as ‘sensation fiction’ that were bursting with eyebrow-raising stories that set the pulse racing.  Among her literary works is a set of short ghost stories.

In the spirit of Hallowe’en a selection of her ghost stories have been adapted and abbreviated for children, especially for this event, by Dr Janine Hatter of the Mary Elizabeth Braddon Association.

Dr Hatter will be reading them aloud for children aged a minimum of 8 years and over. Parents are welcome too.

More information about the stories and the session times will be available on the day.
