Victorian Sensation – The Scandalous Life Of Mary Elizabeth Braddon

Treasure House

Dr Janine Hatter, of the Mary Elizabeth Braddon Association and the University of Hull, will be presenting a talk at the Treasure House to accompany the current exhibition looking at the sensational life and work of scandalous Victorian actress and writer, Mary Elizabeth Braddon.

Mary Braddon shocked Victorian society by living unmarried with her publisher. She had already caused many an eyebrow to raise during her career as well as in her private life. Prior to becoming a writer, Braddon had spent years daringly touring the country as an actress on stage. Her performances included some in Beverley and Hull.

Although born in Soho, London, she developed an affection for Yorkshire and Beverley and settled here to launch her literary career, writing poetry, plays and most notably fiction. She was instrumental in creating the mid-Victorian phenomenon known as ‘sensation-fiction’ – novels bursting with bigamy, kidnap, arson and murder, enough to set the pulse racing!

Dr Janine Hatter from ’s Centre for Nineteenth Century Studies, will explore Braddon’s tumultuous professional and personal experiences, illustrated with material from East Riding Archives and Hull History Centre.

The talk is called ‘Sensational Yorkshire: Mary Braddon, Theatre and Crime’. It will take place on Tuesday 25 October at 6.30pm in the Room at the Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley, 8HE.

Tickets are £5 per person and can be booked in advance by calling (01482) 392699 (Mon-Fri) or by visiting the Archives on the ground floor of the Treasure House.

Any tickets remaining can be purchased on the door.
