Police Officer To Join Other Forces And Tackle The New York Marathon

Local Police Officer Carl Horth says he hopes he can do proud when he and 34 other officers from around the country run the next month.

Mr. Horth will be the sole representative from Humberside Police running to raise money for the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund.

Speaking about the event Mr. Horth said;

“You may remember the horrific events in Manchester in September 2012 where two unarmed Police Officers were shot following a routine burglary call. PC Nicola Hughes was one of the victims of the shooting.”

“Nicola’s father, Bryn Hughes, subsequently set up the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund, where the main aim is to provide learning opportunities and pre- skills in the form of support through grants or services to children under 21 who have suffered a tragic loss of a close family member through a violent crime such as murder or manslaughter.”

“I am a keen runner and when I heard that Mr. Hughes was looking for volunteers from every police force to take part in the New York Marathon I was keen to put myself forward.”

“Bryn, a tireless fundraiser has this year he has come up with the idea of getting at least one member of each police force in the UK to run the New York Marathon. The aim of this event is to raise at least £40,000 to fund a pilot project with the National Homicide Service to help children affected by murder.”

“The charity is for a great cause and a fitting tribute to Nicola who died doing a job she loved while responding to a call that came in as a burglary. I hope that I can do Humberside and myself proud at the marathon by running a decent time and more importantly being part of a great tribute to officers who die in the line of duty.”

“I would we be touched if people would be willing donate on my just giving page and support me in raising as much as possible for the PC Nicola Hughes Memorial Fund. If anyone would like to donate it would be greatly appreciated and going to a very worthwhile cause!”
