The Virger And The Devil Unite To Fight Cancer

The ex-virger of Beverley Minster has teamed up with producer Chilli Devil Sauces to organise a charity evening in support of Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Neil Pickford, now licensee of the Monks Walk public house in Beverley, and Chilli Devil Ian Ibbetson are using the evening to preview a new venture that will see the food producer opening a new pub food offer in Monk’s Walk, combining spicy World Food with traditional pub grub.

The buffet evening on Saturday, July 30, will feature a selection of items from the new menu. There will also be a raffle and auction, with a chilli experience day among the goodies up for grabs.

Chilli Devil Ian, who has run a number of chilli nights in various Hull venues over recent years, said: “I’ve always enjoyed the opportunity to put something back into the community that supports my business and when this opportunity arose it was a no-brainer. Apart from the fact that I love real ale almost as much as I love real food, my father died of cancer and I’ve also lost several friends to it.

“It was actually the charity event that came first, and it was only through talking to Neil about using Monk’s Walk as the venue that I realised there was potentially a wider opportunity for both of us, and I’m really pleased and excited to see it all coming to fruition.”

Publican Neil, who took over the licence of the Monks Walk in April this year, has seen the tragedy of cancer affect many different families over the years.

He said: “I’ve been one of the rare and lucky individuals whose entire family has died of old age but, in my role at Beverley Minster, I watched the sad consequences of loved-ones’ premature deaths through cancer affect hundreds of over the years. In my own small way I want to try and help reduce the amount of pain and sadness caused by this disease and hosting this event is one way to do this.”

The money raised at the buffet evening will help to improve cancer outcomes in Yorkshire by raising awareness of cancer and how to prevent it, promoting screening programmes to increase early detection and funding innovative research projects, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.

Tickets are £10 each in advance and are available from Monks Walk or chillidevilsauces.com.
