Beverley Braves Make It A Perfect Ten With Victory Over All Blacks

Braves under 14s secured their tenth consecutive victory with a convincing win on the wide pitch at Hull All Blacks.

The width of the pitch suited the Braves outside backs who have pace to burn, and this was underlined when Harry Vorwerg took the kick off and raced 60 metres up the right touchline before being dragged down. This set the tone, and it wasn’t long before passed to Vorwerg to score his first in the corner to make it nil 4.

All Blacks competed well for the next ten minutes, and it was up to the Braves to put in a keen defensive effort led once again by Will Swainston, Ethan Rowbotham and George Bennett-Teare. With 13 minutes on the clock scrum half, Lewis Egan superbly changed the focus of attack receiving hooker ’s pass taking the ball on the short side to feed Ollie Loney, who showed great timing to put over in the corner, nil 8.

A few minutes later and it was Murdoch scoring again this time scything straight through the middle to score under the sticks and with Marcus Walker’s conversion, it was nil 14. Beverley were well into their stride now, and Murdoch was unlucky not to score again after backing up a great break from prop Tom Baker.

Murdoch and Baker exchanged passes as they made progress up field with the ball going to ground just yards from the line. The next score was not far away. However, with Wallis creating space again for Vorverg to run in under the sticks and with the conversion this time from Turner the visitors were 22 nil up.

To their credit, All Blacks kept coming at the Braves but enthusiasm wasn’t enough to break down the Beverley defence that stood resolute, typified by another great performance at full back from Ben Hodder, who took all the kicks with such confidence.

On the left wing Will Kirkup had one of his best games this year with some tenacious tackling typified when along with Hodder, he forced an All Blacks drop out. With the clock ticking on towards half-time, it was a familiar combination for the next try, Walker taking on the line before putting Wallis through a gaping hole in the All Blacks defence to score after rounding the opposition full back. Walker added the extras, and it was nil 26 at half-time.

It was a much-improved performance from the All Blacks in the second half, but they made the worst possible start being caught offside when the ball from the kick off was kicked forward by an All Blacks defender. From the resulting possession, Beverley moved the ball right where the opposition defence was struggling for numbers, which allowed Murdoch to seal his second hat-trick of the season – nil 30.

Kai Johnson was now on the field and his no nonsense running caused the All Blacks no end of trouble and with Ollie Gresswell on as a fresh pair of legs the Beverley defence held firm despite increased possession for the home side. A lovely piece of vision created the next try as Walker shaped to kick on the last tackle but then ran on the short side to put Tom Cohen in for a try in the corner.

All Blacks had some pride to keep and in order not to be nilled the scrum half dropped a goal to make it 1-34.

Late in the game Rowbotham moved to hooker for the Braves, a change that over the past few weeks has switched the way the Braves attack and has caught out the opposition and today was no exception with Vorwerg, who revealed all game in the open spaces created by his team mates scoring the final try, converted by Walker.

Final Score: Hull All Blacks 1 Beverley Braves 40

Joint men of the match Vorwerg and Hodder.
