Local Scout Group Mark Queen’s 90th Birthday

This weekend saw , Cubs and Beavers hosted a special event to mark the Queen’s 90th Birthday.

Family members were invited to the event that was staged at their hut on . Attended by the deputy Mayor of Beverley the day was packed with lots of different activities.

Group Scout Leader 1st Molescroft Scouts says that scouting is growing in popularity. However, a short fall in volunteers means some children are missing out on the Scouting experience.

Speaking to HU17.net Mr. Sharpe said;

“Volunteers are really important for the success of Scouting. We have young children on the waiting list  who cannot get into scouting at the moment. There are 40,000 young people nationally who can join as we don’t have the volunteers.”

“Scouting is about everyday  adventure for the young people, equally is an everyday adventure for the grownups as well.”

“In terms of volunteering we are very flexible these days. If are people are unable to commit every week people can do a couple of hours here and there, every little helps in getting the young people involved.”

Nationally Scouting has grown year on year, when asked why Mr. Sharp said;

“We are still doing a lot of the old-fashioned  adventure based activities that young people do not get at home sat playing on their Xbox, so all those values and skills that were important 20 – 30 years ago are still equally important these days.”

“Across our group at the moment, we have Beavers, Cubs and scouts totalling about 60 young people ranging from 6 to 14 years old. From there they go to join an Explorer Unit which is run at a district level.”

Part of Scouting is doing your badges, these tend to teach you new skills or test your abilities in a range of skills. One Scout Tom has 18 badges. He has badges in first aid, climbing, master at arms, cooking and nights away camping.

Mr. Sharpe added;

“In the last year, we have given out 500 badges for the young people, so they are doing lots of different things.”
