Howdle Please With Players Attitude After Watching His Side Win

The blue and golds kick-started their season with this win in a high-scoring encounter at Sirius Academy last Saturday.

Wingman Josh Poskitt stole the show with a four try performance to take the man of the match award. He is now proving a real asset to the club since his release from Hull FC gave him a way back into the amateur game. The visitors were boosted by returning players from last weekends depleted side.

Captain Tom Radley returned to add experience in the centres and Jack Howdle to stand off to considerably boost the back division. The pack was boosted by the return of Lee Stevens, and Jack Humphries returned to loose man.

In a happier frame of mind Pat Howdle said;

”I am pleased with the attitude today. We were under pressure to get off the mark. We got on with the job, and hopefully we can now get our season back on track.”

Norland took the lead after 5 minutes when some strong defence by them forced Billy Riby into touch. The resulting set from the scrum saw them score a converted try. Then Beverley aided by some penalties worked their way up-field to exert some pressure.

A knock down by a Norland defender gave them an extra set, and the ball was moved to the right for Tom Radley to score with the extras not added. Shortly after Beverley took the lead following a Norland handling error. Billy Riby then kicked on for Josh Poskitt to re-gather and score and also add the extras. The lead changed hands again when Beverley turned possession over deep in their own half. The next set then saw them score a converted try.

Beverley response was again quick. ’s cross-field kick was knocked on by the opposing winger. After several attempts to force their way over, the ball was moved to the right for Alex Calvert to send Tom Shires over.

Calvert almost put Shires away again, moments later, when he split the home defence but Shires could not hold the difficult pass. Then the lead did increase when Jack Humphries long ball found Josh Poskitt lurking. The winger did well to evade at least two tackles to touch down.

The lead increased still further when a mazy run by Jack Howdle saw his pass find Tom Radley, who held off the chasing cover to score. None of these three tries were converted. Beverley were guilty of a little indiscipline as half-time approached and conceded penalties to allow the home side to work up-field and score a converted try and reduce Beverley’s lead to 22-18 at the break.

Norland looked dangerous in the opening exchanges of the second half. However, just when they looked likely to score a pass was intercepted by Josh Poskitt to race 90 meters to score. Jack Howdle goaled this time. Ten minutes later a kick ahead by Josh Poskitt forced a line drop-out. Then Lewis Poskitt’s kick struck the post and was pounced on by to score. Howdle again adding the goal for a 34-18 lead.

Norland then did threaten a comeback with a try to reduce Beverley’s lead to 34-22 with 15 minutes remaining. However, that threat was extinguished with ten minutes left. Lewis Poskitt’s kick up-field was chased all the way by Josh Poskitt and when the Norland full back fumbled the ball, he pounced to score. Howdle converted to seal the league points at 40-22. Norland added a consolation score in the closing minutes.

This Saturday Beverley are at home to West Bowling. The Bradford outfit have only just decided to quit the Winter based Pennine Premier Division in search of a more competitive structure.

A tough game is in prospect as they lost only narrowly 24-22 last weekend at fancied outfit Doncaster Toll Bar. Kick-off is 2.30pm at the Beverley Leisure Centre.
