Out of this World at East Riding Libraries on National Libraries Day

Wizarding Fun At Beverley Library

National Libraries Day on Saturday 6 February heralds the start of two fun competitions at .

Inspired by Tim Peake’s adventure to the International Space Station, activities in the libraries have taken on an intergalactic theme. From Saturday 6 February, all children aged 4-11 are invited to write down their favourite book on a cardboard star, which will be added to a large rocket outline. The competition will run until Saturday 27 February. Three stars will be selected at random to win a spot prize.

The second competition invites all children aged 4-11 to experiment with their literary creativity. Participants are invited to write a piece of no more than 200 words with the following inspiration:

“You’re making a time capsule to send into space, which book would you choose to send with it, and why?”

The competition will be judged by award winning author and illustrator, Simon Bartram, best known for his space-themed story: ‘Man on the Moon: A Day in the Life of Bob’. Simon’s hugely popular event was sold out at Beverley Children’s Literature Festival last year.

Librarian Tracey Booth said : “We hope as many children as possible will enter the Creative Writing Competition which launches in East Riding Libraries on Saturday 6 February to celebrate National Libraries Day. The theme is all about space and which book you would put in a time capsule on its way to another planet!

“We hope the competition will encourage children to take an interest in the journey of Tim Peake on the International Space Station, whilst discovering some ‘Out of this World’ reading material in their local libraries. On the day itself children can visit their library and get involved in decorating a rocket and for adults there is the chance to win a spot prize.”

Librarians have handpicked special prize books for the three categories Pre-School, Reception to Year 2, and Year 3 to Year 6, and entries can be made by e-mail (LAMA@eastriding.gov.uk) or directly to library branches. The competition closes on Saturday 27 February.

Simon Bartram will also be visiting Beverley Children’s Library for a special ‘Meet the Author’ Storytime (bookings advisable), and to personally award the prizes, on Saturday 5 March. Winners for both competitions will be notified by Wednesday 2 March.
