Offers have been put in place at East Riding Leisure Beverley in the run up to Christmas as the council looks to encourage people to give a gift of health.

For a limited period a one-month membership to the facility in Beverley is now available for £ 19.50, which is a saving over £13 on the normal price.

While the price is reduced people who take advantage of this offer will still enjoy the benefits of a full package and will have access to the full premier package of exercise classes, gym, swim and sports hall use.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said:

“What better than the gift of health at Christmas?”

“I hope that this special offer will encourage lots of people to take advantage of these great membership packages, to help improve their overall health and wellbeing.”

“The Gift of Health is a one-off promotion, running until 31 December only, and could make the perfect Christmas gift.”

For those who want to make more of a commitment to getting fit and healthy, there are other deals in place offering discounts.

Available is a three-month package; six months’ membership for the price of five; and 15 months for the price of 12.

Recently, the council released figures that have shown a steady increase in the number of people using Beverley Leisure Centre following £1.2M project.

While the gym may state of the art, the same cannot be said for the playing fields which are used by local sporting clubs.

Part of the improvement works in Beverley has seen the playing fields at Beverley Leisure Centre carved up to make room for a car park displacing some sides that now play out of Beverley.

While it is great that the council are doing what they can to get people to sign up to the gym it is without question more needs to be done to address sub standard open space people in the town have access to for sport and recreation.
