Beverley Too Strong For Rotherham

Luke Hazell Scores Twice As Colts Progress in National Cup

In wet and windy conditions Beverley proved themselves to be far too strong for Rotherham in almost every department.

Beverley kicked off into the wind and was soon advancing on the Rotherham line. Within 5 minutes a flowing move in the backs led to the first score of the game by . This went unconverted. (5/0)

Time and time again the Beverley forwards secured their own ball and took ball off of Rotherham. It was this possession that soon saw Beverley crossing the whitewash again, this time it was Jake Marin who scored. The try was converted by (12/0)

Next try was finished off by Luke Hazell who scored in the corner again this went unconverted. (17/0) There was then a prolonged period of midfield play where Rotherham, who were much larger than the Beverley pack matched the forwards to give good ball to Rotherham. Who unfortunately in the conditions were unable to handle to good effect.

Beverley followed this period with good possession. The Beverley forwards rucking and working hard to secure ball. A sweeping movement left Conor Egan on the hallway line with the ball. As is fitting of his class and skill he raced past some slower opposition and finished his try under the posts. This time the conversion was good (24/0)

Beverley returned the kick-off and was unlucky to be held up over the line. However the resultant scrum saw Hart Fisher pick up. Having played for the first team the day before he was not on his usual form and was spelled on and off and replaced admirably by Will Cook. However, from this scrum five out he was not to be denied and went in for the score. The conversion was good. (31/5)

The halftime whistle sounded a welcome relief to the visitors.

The second half started in much the same way. Beverley holding onto their ball whilst Rotherham being unable to do very much with the possession that they had.

The next two tries were scored by winger Sam Fussey. Both were very well finished with class and determination. With both being converted by Joey Franklin this took the score to (45/0)
A strong forward drive led to the next try. The forwards who might appear to be bit players in fact played

their part masterfully. Matching Rotherham in the scrums and this week winning their own lineouts cleanly. Their open play was also good taking the ball in well and with some excellent recycling.

During one of these phases the forwards did just that and threatening the line. Will Cook powered over to score his first try of the season. This was again converted. (52/0) Given the league rules this now meant that fifty points had been passed and the contest was over.

The game however is allowed to carry on. Credit to Rotherham who carried on playing to the end
Harrison Mayou next crossed the line which was the second of what was going to be a hatrick for him.

The try was converted (57/0) Followed by a fine forward drive from Jack Vorweg who went over for the tenth try of the day. This was converted by Andy Rowbotham (64/0)

Final honours for Beverley went to Harrison Mayou, finishing off another fine movement with a 40 metre run to go under the posts. Again converted this was to be Beverley’s final score (71/0)

Beverley unfortunately felt that they had done enough and only had to field the kick-off before the game was over. Sadly, no one had told Rotherham the plan and with great credit to them they pushed the ball back to themselves at kick off and with a great run their big number 3 strode over the try line to touch down for a well-deserved consolation try. This going unconverted (71/5)

The final whistle went both sides shook hands in what had been a remarkably good spirited game. Well done Beverley for a good performance and for levels of concentration to the end; well almost!
