Beverley Brings Medieval History To Life To Celebrate Agincourt 600

This weekend, from 23-25 October, the town of Beverley will be hosting a series of events commemorating 600 years since the battle of Agincourt.

Beverley has sacred links to the battle, as in 1415 King Henry V won the battle of Agincourt on the Feast of St John of Beverley’s translation (25th October). Famed for his miraculous works of healing, St John of Beverley also had the reputation of granting victory in battle, and it became customary for The Minster to send one man with the banner whenever the King summoned an army. In 1420 the King then visited St John’s shrine to give thanks and made him one of the patron saints of the Royal family.

The Agincourt 600 celebrations begin on Friday 23rd October in , where a medieval style banquet will be held from 6.30pm – 10.30pm, and guests are invited to wear period costume. This is a ticketed event and anyone interested in attending should call 01482 874096 for further information.

Then on Saturday 24th October, from 1.00pm to 5.00pm in St. Mary’s Church, there will be a medieval living history day, including workshops with the Sir John Savile’s Household Living History group and the Knights in Battle Medieval Society.

A medieval camp with the Knights of Skirbeck will bring history to life and is held on Sunday 25th October, held in Coronation Gardens in Beverley, from 10.30am to 4.00pm.

Also on Sunday 25th October, from 10.30am to 4.00pm in the Guildhall in Beverley, there is a chance to experience what life in the town would have been like 600 years ago, with weaponry, armoury, cookery, pilgrim badges, needlework, and more.

The weekend of events concludes with a medieval procession starting at Saturday Market at 4.45pm and proceeding throughout the town, reaching Beverley Minster at 5.30pm.

Local school children from primary schools in Beverley have decorated pennant flags to commemorate Agincourt 600, and these will be on display at the various events, and also will be held high during the procession at 4.45 on Sunday.

All of the events on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th are free to attend and are sponsored by Beverley Town Council.
