Carnival Band will welcome concertgoers to the tabloid world of the ballad at , on Thursday 22 October 2015 at 7.30pm.

These 17th century chart-toppers have it all – murder, sex, revenge, true love, the supernatural, heroism, low cunning, unimaginable cruelty and heart-warming happy endings. It will be a chance to meet a cast of star-crossed lovers, treacherous sons, roguish soldiers, glamorous royals, scurrilous old men, feisty young women, brutal husbands, moralizing preachers, innocent babes, wicked uncles, murderers, ghosts and dragons.

All set to some of the most hummable tunes and toe-tapping dance rhythms to come out of a golden age of English music.

The Carnival Band is well known to Beverley audiences for its exuberant and full-blooded performances of early music fused with traditional and world music and has been called ‘Henry VIII’s rock ‘n roll band’.

Five play shawm, curtal, cittern and Flemish bagpipes alongside the more recognizable fiddle, drums, guitar and bass and sing in full harmony. They are joined by Vivien Ellis, a leading exponent of the English ballad tradition, and a star of the English early music scene.
