Win £100 Voucher For The Pipe And Glass Inn

Keen cooks from across the East Riding are being urged to enter the council’s Christmas Bake Off Competition – with a £100 voucher for East Yorkshire’s Michelin Star restaurant, the Pipe and Glass Inn, up for grabs by the winners!

The annual contest is looking for people to come up with an original recipe that uses Christmas leftovers to create a tasty new dish.

Organised by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s waste and officers, the competition is run to highlight how easy it is to save money and waste less food by using leftovers to create great meals, instead of throwing them straight into the bin.

There are two categories – ages 11 to 16, and ages 17 and over – so anyone of senior school age upwards can have a go at cooking up something special. Even whole classes and families can get involved, as long as they enter individually.

You can download an entry form, alongside full terms and conditions, from the council’s website at www.eastriding.gov.uk/christmas-bake-off or you can find one in the autumn edition of Your East Riding magazine.

The final three chosen from each category will have the opportunity to cook their festive recipe at the Yorkshire Wolds Cookery School at Southburn, near Driffield, on Saturday 31 October this year – and have their dishes judged by Michelin-starred chef James Mackenzie, of the Pipe and Glass Inn, in South Dalton.

Last year’s Bake Off winners were Karyn Hoggard with her recipe for festive tiffin, and Jenny Smith with her dish, Christmas layered picnic pies. The other finalists created Twixmas broth, a Christmas dinner parcel, turkey and bacon pot pie and Christmas tree cookies.

Councillor , the council’s portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said: “A lot of leftover food goes straight into the brown bin, even more at Christmas time, but this competition is a great way of showing people they can save so much money by making the most of their leftovers.

“The Bake Off is also a fantastic way for some of our local youngsters to develop their cookery skills, because they are the chefs of the future.”

The closing date for entries is Monday 5 October 2015. Recipes must show they can be made from either leftover food, wind fallen fruit or surplus vegetables and everyday store cupboard ingredients.

First place winners will receive a £100 voucher for the Pipe and Glass Inn. Those in second place will receive a ceramic kitchen compost caddy (17 and over) or an insulated lunch bag (11-16 years). All finalists will receive a signed James Mackenzie cookery book, On The Menu, and a recycling goodie bag.

The finalists’ recipes will also be made into cookery cards, which the council’s waste and recycling team will use to promote the reduction of food waste at home.

Completed entry forms should be sent to: Let’s Waste Less Food Competition, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Waste and Recycling Officers, Viking Close, Willerby, HU10 6DZ
