Beverley Have Their Pockets Picked at the Leisure Centre

The blue and golds suffered a last minute heart-breaker as a touchline conversion from the visitors in the very last second of play went over to ensure both league points went back to West Yorkshire.

In a thrilling afternoon’s rugby the home side, aided by inspirational second half performances from Guy Adams and Jake Hart-Fisher, fought back from 18-6 down at the break to lead 23-18 in the dying seconds.

A long ball found there ever dangerous left winger who touched down in the corner. Spectators and players dare not look as the difficult conversion sailed between the posts.

Beverley took the lead in the 10th-minute courtesy of a dart from close range from Bobby Howdle, who was lively in the number nine jersey all afternoon. Howdle converted his own try. The visitors were ever dangerous. Their youthful and well drilled side threw the ball wide at almost every opportunity continually stretching the home defence. They added three converted tries in a 15-minute spell.

Indeed, some desperate scrambling defence did well to restrict them to that. Lee Falcus was called upon to make try saving tackles on more than one occasion. The ship appeared to be steadying toward half-time as the hosts managed to get some improved field position. However, the visitors looked defensively very difficult to breach moving up very quickly into the faces of Beverley.

Some repeat sets in the Siddal 20 meter area with the break approaching produced nothing. This was despite half backs Lewis Poskitt and Joe Morley attempting almost every trick from short balls to long balls and chips to the corner and in-goal areas. The score remained 18-6 as Beverley headed for the half-time dressing rooms.

Beverley immediately got the initiative at the start of the second half. The visitors kicked the ball out on the full from the restart with the resulting penalty giving good field position to the hosts. They managed to force some repeat sets as Morley and Poskitt continued to probe.

Eventually, the ball was moved to the right for the strong running Jake Hart-Fisher to score out wide. The extras were not added, but the fightback was on. Beverley continued to pile on the pressure against a very well organised defence urged on by a captivated crowd. In the 55th minute, they got their rewards during one of their many sets in the Siddal 20 meter zone.

As they continued to keep the ball, alive Siddal defenders were sucked into the middle. Joe Morley’s visionary long ball found Jack Humphries lurking out wide who then took the ball ran in behind the posts to score and for Howdle to add the extras.

There were few ventures into the Beverley half for the visitors in the second half but despite a lions share of possession and territory the Siddal line proved very difficult to breach. Ever more inventive methods had to be tried. Joe Morley’s kick on the last struck a Siddal man and went into the hand of Stuart Nell, who forced his way over. Howdle converted for a 22-18 lead with 10 minutes to go.

As the clock ticked down Lewis Pokitt added a drop-goal to stretch the lead but ironically this back-fired on the home side. Siddal regained possession from the re-start kick. They were forced into touch in that set which seemed to be the match saver.

But as Beverley played out a set, the ball was stolen and a long ball saw their left winger do the rest in the corner, and the subsequent conversion left Beverley feeling they had had their pockets picked.

Jake Hart-Fisher took the man of the match award by the committee with Guy Adams being voted the man of the match by the opposing coaching staff. Both sets of coaching staffs agreed on what tremendous game that had unfolded with perhaps a draw a fair result.

Beverley will look to pick themselves up this Saturday when Milford ‘A’ are the visitors to the kicking off at 2.30pm.
