Charity of the Month Winner for June - Volunteer Uganda Limited

Sophie Mozley, ’s newest cashier, together with Nicola Parkinson from the Savings Team, were both excited to congratulate local volunteer from the East Riding of Yorkshire, Olivia Bucknall.

The winning Charity, Volunteer Uganda Limited, awarded Olivia a placement on their teaching programme in southwest Uganda.

Olivia on expressing her gratitude to the Society for supporting this charity says:

“Thank you Beverley Building Society for this contribution of £250 which you have donated to Volunteer Uganda Limited. This has enabled the charity to support me with these funds, towards my placement in Uganda. Whilst there, I will be volunteering in a primary school in the Bwindi district of rural southwest Uganda for six weeks.”

“There, over 90% of the population live on less than a dollar a day. Fertility rates exceed 8 children per woman, resulting in class sizes of up to 70 children and as a consequence of this there is a huge shortfall in the number of qualified teachers.”

“To help support the community whilst there, I will teach English, Mathematics and Science to the best of my ability, to provide an to those who are in desperate need of it. I will also be involved with other projects such as ‘Classics Club’, taking part in HIV/AIDS outreaches and several other projects
I am truly grateful for Beverley Building Society’s support with this donation to Volunteer Uganda Limited.”

The Society is happy to continue to support local registered charities and would welcome details of any based in East Yorkshire. Please contact Christine Hornshaw, Manager on 01482 881510, or call into the branch.
