CRICKET: Beverley Beat York By One Wicket

Woodhouse Grange remain on top of the Hunters York & District Senior League Premier Division after four wickets from Josh Jackson helped the leaders get the better of a draw at Acomb as the top two went head-to-head. Michael Hattee finished unbeaten on 48 after Chris Bilton (45) and Nick Hadfield (37) had laid the foundation for the visitors total of 179-6, Mark Bell (4-56) taking four of the six wickets to fall. The home side maintained their unbeaten start to the season but could only manage 128-7 in reply as Jackson (4-39) held them at bay, Matthew Dale top scoring with 30.

Sheriff Hutton Bridge climbed above Acomb into second place with a five wicket victory at home to Fenner. In a rain affected match the hosts made 111-5 from 29 overs thanks largely to an unbeaten 38 from Russell Robinson, Richard Barker finishing with 3-23. Only two batsmen reached double figures, Luke Laybourne (58) and Grant Van Es (17), in the visitor’s total of 109 as Mark Fisher claimed figures of 5-56.

Stamford Bridge’s Stuart Boyle made the day’s highest score finishing unbeaten just five short of his century, and shared a stand of 103 with Sam Tennant (38) as their side chased down Dunnington’s 170-7 for the loss of just two wickets. Earlier Jack Bolam (84) and Jake Murphy (48) had done their best to provide a challenging total despite the efforts of Dom Rhodes (4-54). The result leaves Dunnington still searching for their first win and saw them drop to the foot of the table.

Heworth came within six runs of victory but had to settle for a share of the points at home to Studley Royal, the Elmpark Way side becoming renowned for close finishes as for the third time in a row their match went down to the wire. The visitors, having had their last three matches abandoned to the weather, were indebted to second wicket partnership of 84 between Rob Nicholson (67) and Rob Mackie (42) as Richard Walton took 5-32 to restrict them to 174-8. An opening stand of 52 between Neil Johnson (30) and Dan Walton (28) gave the home side a good start, but four wickets from Dan Craven pegged them back, another half-century stand from Richard Walton (47) and Tom Owen (30) took their side close but both were out in the dramatic finale.

There was an equally tense finish at Clifton Park were Town Cricket Club beat host’s York by a single wicket with just seven balls to spare. The home side recovered from 49-5 thanks to Mike Mortimer (46) and Felix Adams (37) and it looked as though 157 might be enough, until an unbeaten 60 from Andrew Burton saw the visitors home, Faisal Abid (36) also contributing to the successful chase.

Hull Zingari climbed off the foot of the table with victory by three wickets at Easingwold, both sides having gone into the contest still searching for a first win. The home side slumped to 19-4 before skipper Martin Piercy helped them limp to 122-8 with an unbeaten 31, Andrew Hamson finishing with 4-30. The divison’s leading run scorer, Jack Storey made 36 at the top of the order as, despite the efforts of Stephen Piercy (4-24) the visitors reached their target with three wickets in hand.
No play was possible in the match between Clifton Alliance and Scarborough but a share of the points keeps both sides in contention for a top six finish.
