Graham Stuart Celebrates Landmark For Jobs

, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for and Holderness, welcomed today’s news that the number of claiming out of work benefits in the constituency has fallen to under 1,000.

Between February and March, the claimant count fell by a further 46 to just 976. Since the Government came to office in May 2010, there has been a 1,127 fall in the number of people claiming JSA – a decrease of 54%.

In the last quarter, the number of people in across the UK increased by 248,000, with the number of unemployed people falling by 76,000. The number of people in work now stands at 31.05 million – the highest figure on record. This represents an increase of two million since the last election, with a thousand jobs being created on average every day.

Graham said: “I’m delighted that unemployment in Beverley & Holderness has now fallen to below a thousand. Because of the Conservatives’ plan, even more people from the East Riding now have the security and hope that comes with a regular pay packet every month.

“I’m particularly pleased to see that wages over the last year have increased by 1.7% on average, well above the rate of inflation. There’s still much more to do, but living standards are starting to improve again after Labour’s Great Recession and Britain is turning the corner. We can’t throw away all the hard work of the British people over the last five years and return to the economic chaos of Labour.

“Over Labour’s time in office, a million people lost their jobs and the number of workless households doubled. Labour always trash the economy and leave more people unemployed. Where Labour offer despair for working people, the Conservatives offer hope of a better future.”
