Improved Environmental Awareness Leads To Cost Savings

Hull-based marine electronics firm Atlantis ES Ltd is the latest to benefit from environmental consultancy from the Energy Technology Centre (ETC).

The ETC, an ERDF-funded project run by East Riding College, has identified cost savings based on improved environmental management, including income which can be generated from the reuse and recycling of waste.

The company has also been provided with documentation related to environmental management and corporate social responsibility to improve its ability to tender for business with large companies.
Atlantis ES is the latest organisation across a wide range of sectors to benefit from ETC services and employers are being encouraged to take up the offer of the last remaining project opportunities this year.

Atlantis ES founder Layton Barr said:

“Our project with the ETC has resulted in us changing a number of practices which will both save costs and generate income, as well as providing policy documents which will be valuable as we seek to secure business from large potential clients.”

“These are all simple to put into practice but, as a small business owner, it is difficult to find time to develop these ideas, which the ETC has done for us.”

ETC business consultant Paul Jensen said:

“Our project with Atlantis ES has enabled them to make real cost savings and identify a new income source by taking simple steps that are achievable within existing staffing and resource limits.”

“Not only that, the range of policy documents we have drawn up will improve their prospects of working with large businesses, many of whom commit to working with environmentally responsible suppliers and contractors.”

Atlantis ES is a forward-thinking and growing company which provides telecommunication, entertainment and security technology services to the commercial shipping and yachting industry.

The company has recognised the business benefits of being environmentally responsible but, like many small and medium sized companies, does not have dedicated staff responsible for managing the environmental impact of their operations.
The ETC worked with Atlantis ES to help them identify their environmental impacts and produce a bespoke environmental management system which can be implemented by existing members of staff.

Producing an environmental management plan has allowed Atlantis ES and the ETC to identify several areas where cost savings can be made through simple energy efficiency and waste management measures.

These approaches were encapsulated in an Environment Policy, and Atlantis ES’ work with schools and the wider community helped with the creation of a Corporate Social Responsibility Policy, both of which are very useful in the tendering process.

The ETC is working with businesses across the region to provide funded and part-funded environmental consultancy services, with a limited number of project opportunities now remaining.

Funded by the ERDF, it will occupy part of East Riding College’s new Beverley campus, which is part of the Flemingate shopping and leisure development and which opens in September.
