Ali Crompton Says He Will Support Youth Workers if Elected in May

Ali Crompton who will be standing in the local elections in May says more should be done to engage young people saying he would look to re-open up facilities in the local area if elected.

Mr. Crompton who is hoping to be elected as an Independent in the St Mary’s award has a keen interest and knowledge in working with local young people in the area.

Speaking about his experiences and the opportunities available to young people in Beverley Mr. Crompton said;

“I have been involved in within the town for 10 years and had the joy of being involved in some great projects by some wonderful people.”

“On one hand, there are lots of things to do in Beverley for young people with after school clubs, scouts, Church Lads and Girls brigades, track boxing club and other community and faith groups running various clubs and activities.”

“On the other hand, the other hand what I have also witnessed is not only the removal of open access youth session and detached youth workers from East Riding, but also the closure of youth centres that provided valuable places for young people to feel safe, be part of a community, learn vital life skills and a place they could be supported.”

However, Mr. Crompton is keen to point out that while we have the facilities, he feels not enough is being done to open them up to a wider audience.

He said;

“As youth provision isn’t a statutory requirement for the local authority, and with reduced budgets, I guess this is only to be expected. However, what I can’t see any logic in is blocking the use of our only, once vibrant, youth centre on Burden Road to community groups who could run open access sessions.”

It is no secret that in the past few years, the only youth club that was open in Beverley has long since been closed. All the efforts over the years by many people to engage young people teaching them basic skills like growing food and then cooking the food they grew are now just distant memories.

Mr. Crompton is calling for this centre to be returned to the community, commenting on the youth club he said;

“Even the boxing club has faced immense difficulties. I personally would like to see this centre back open for all the community, and see an increase in other open access sessions and detached workers operating across the town again.”

“If true I also can’t see, where finance is available, the objection of employing detached youth workers for the town who can meet, greet, talk to and support those young people down at the Beverley Skate Park, those that meet in the local parks or those who like to hang out on street corners.”

“More structured sessions suit some young people but for others, more informal groups are equally important. What is needed is a blend of activities for all.”

“I congratulate all who work or volunteer to support young people across our town and if elected, I will seek to support our youth workers, youth groups and young people, so that they have the best opportunities to succeed.”

Mr. Crompton who is currently a member of and employed by the will be standing for the first time on 7 May as he looks to get elected onto East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
