Cycleathon In Memory Of Former Care Worker

Staff and service users at two residential care homes and a day centre, run by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, have joined forces to undertake a marathon cycle ride in memory of a former colleague who has lost his battle with Motor Neurone Disease.

Care worker Ron Aboe was just 61 years of age when he lost his battle with the disease in February, prompting his former colleagues at Town View care home, in Beverley to honour his memory by holding a 12-hour cycleathon in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Staff and service users at Town View teamed up with those at The New House and Millers Day Centre, in Beverley to hold the event which has so far raised over £600, with further donations still coming in.
This includes a single £200 donation from the Beverley Lions Club.

Everyone, including service users, care workers, domestic assistants, and cooks got involved in the cycleathon which saw participants taking it in turns to ride for a period of time on a static bike over a 12 hour period, from 8am to 8pm.

Town View manager Diane Golding said: “This really was a fantastic team effort involving staff and service users from all three centres.

“We have been overwhelmed with the generosity that people have shown in support of this event and we would like to thank everyone who has made a donation or taken part for such a worthwhile cause.

“Ron was a truly valued member of the team, well known and respected in the caring profession, and is sorely missed by all who knew him. We hope that the money raised will go some way towards supporting research into what is a terrible disease.”

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the nerves in the brain or spinal cord, eventually affecting the way in which a person walks, talks, eats, drinks and breathes.
