Students at East Riding College have been given extra help to improve their employability skills through a range of initiatives.
Learners benefitted from resources provided by the Prepare for Work programme, which is designed to help 100,000 further education college students across the UK maximise their chances of securing and maintaining employment.
They were also visited by experts from the Careers Inc impartial advisory service and engaged with business people as a result of a link-up with the Education and Employers charity.
Employability is the term used for a range of “soft” skills and attributes which employers look for in addition to the general ability to do a job, such as communication skills, timekeeping, problem solving and entrepreneurship.
Melanie Brown, the College’s guidance services manager, said:
“East Riding College is committed to ensuring learners have access to and receive the support and advice they need to get them ready for the world of work.”
“The Prepare to Work programme slots very nicely into the College’s own career education, information, advice and guidance support programme and the free resources provided, in addition to our work with Careers Inc and Education and Employers, has helped to ensure they receive the best information and support available.”
Each year, the College invites external agencies to support its Next Step events, which help learners decide whether to stay in education or go into employment after they complete their current course.
Students gather information about universities, apprenticeships, employment, setting up their own business and becoming a volunteer to gain essential work experience.
Careers Inc, an impartial careers advisory service, visit the college to deliver impartial information on careers and the world of work, including CVs, preparing for interview, labour market information, getting learners to recognise their personal brand and meeting with them on a one-to-one basis.
The College also now works with Inspiring the Future, run by the Education and Employers charity, to invite employers into College to inform and inspire learners on what they have to do to get into certain areas of employment.
