George McManus Calls For More To Be Done Save Pubs In Beverley

George McManus has described the news that Beverley may lose another Public House as Tragic.

With likely to be turned into a convenience store and news that on Wingfield Way is to close and be converted into an residential home Mr MacManus said;

“Beverley may about to lose two long standing and formerly successful pubs. The tragic news that last orders may be called at both the Victoria Pub and the Lincoln Arms will be a blow to traditionalists who see pubs as an essential part of everyday life like corner shops and post offices.”

“Responsibility needs to be laid fairly and squarely at the door of government, national and local.”

“People aren’t drinking less. They’ re just not going to pubs to do it. As incomes have dropped, drinkers are being pushed into supermarkets where prices are lower as government squeezes more and more tax from the pub pulled pint.”

“It’s ironic that at least one of these pubs could be the replaced by a supermarket selling cheap booze.”

“Pubs are private businesses. They need customers and if customers are struggling to buy food they won’t pay £3 for a pint of beer.”

“As the budget approaches, the Chancellor would do well to take measures that will get people back to work, immediately cut the massive tax take or your favourite pint and introduce minimum pricing in supermarkets.”

“ If not, the decline will continue and your local pub could rapidly become a thing of the past.”

With pubs closing at the rate of 29 per week in the UK Camra are blaming planning loopholes for the acceleration in the disappearance of British pubs.

High property prices mean that Pubs are being targeted more and more by developers who can transform them in multiple homes and cash in.

In January of this year the government put forward proposals to make things more difficult for pubs to be demolished or undergo change-of-use without planning permission.

Communities minister, Kris Hopkins said the changes would be brought into law at the earliest opportunity giving greater protections for pubs while allowing people to have a say in their preservation.
