New Cycle Crime Prevention Initiative Rolled Out In Beverley

A new cycle crime prevention and security initiative being run by the local Neighbourhood Policing Team in partnership with the Beverley and Rural Community Partnership, local cycle shops and local businesses. In response to concerns that cycle theft in the area has increased in recent months the Local Neighbourhood Policing Team wanted to take action to help try and advise owners on how to keep cycles secure and what they could do to help prevent becoming a victim of crime. PCSO Marc McClarron has been working hard over the past year to bring local businesses, police and authorities together to help reduce the amount of cycle theft in the town. PCSO McClarron said; “Shed burglaries involving cycles being stolen and cycle thefts from public places are currently high in the local area. I want to help try and reduce the amount of victims of this crime.” “ By raising awareness of the issue and helping people become more security conscious we hope to reduce the number of cycle theft in Beverley.” “To coincide with this new initiative, we have planned an event to take place at the Beverley Leisure Centre which aims to promote the use of cycle marking/coding and registering cycles on the free property registration website immobilise.com.” “The event will provide cycle coding, cycle registration on immobilise.com and offer crime prevention advice.” Councillor David Elvidge, chair of the Beverley and Rural Community Partnership said: “I am delighted that we have been able to financially support this initiative, and have arranged for our police colleagues to be joined at the event by ERYC road safety officers, who will offer additional road safety advice, hand out local cycling maps and run a Dr Bike cycle clinic, giving bikes a road worthy safety check over.” PCSO Mark McClarron said; “Local vehicle body repair services SML Body Repairs have been kind enough to spray a number of old cycles in bright colours that will be chained up across the town to highlight the issues of cycle security and safety. I’d like to personally thank them for the support SML Body Repairs have given to the initiative.” The cycle safety and crime prevention event will take place at the Beverley Leisure Centre, Flemingate in Beverley on Wednesday 18 February 2015 between 10am and 2pm. PCSO McClarron added; “Anyone unable to attend this event can take their cycles to any local cycle shop to have their cycle coded. They can also register their own cycles and other property on www.immobilise.com.”
