Latest figures show that East Riding of Yorkshire residents have recycled a record amount in their blue kerbside bins.

In the UK nearly 6 million tons of ‘dry’ , the items we put in our blue bins, was collected from households with  around 42% of that being paper and card.

In September, over 3,000 tonnes of recycling were collected in East Yorkshire the highest figure ever in one month.

The figure represents an increase of around 18 per cent over the same month last year and an increase of over 17 per cent on the figure for August this year.

East Riding residents can recycle a range of items in their blue bins, including newspapers, magazines, junk mail, and all types of cardboard including greetings cards, books, shredded paper, envelopes and clean beverage cartons.

The bins can also be used for items including clear and coloured plastic bottles, clean yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, steel and aluminium cans, empty aerosol cans, glass bottles and jars.

Councillor , said:

“I am delighted by the response from our residents to the need to recycle, and especially pleased by these latest record figures.”

Figures published by the government show that throughout the UK local authorities are recycling around 43 per cent of all waste they manage compared to just 12 per cent in 2000 meaning us Brits truly are fast becoming a greener nation.

Councillor Fraser added;

“We are aiming even higher with our recycling rates in the East Riding and I am sure, that given the fantastic response so far, we will achieve even greater success.”

Compared to other counties in the UK, East Yorkshire is one of the few places in the top bracket recycling over 50 per cent of the waste that is collected. In London less than 30% of what is collected is recycled with most being sent to landfill sites.
