Armistice Day in Beverley:  Young and Old Pause to Remember

Beverley today paused and remembered those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

Shoppers, children, local officials and former members of the armed services gathered in the town centre and at Hengate Gardens to hold a two-minute silence on the eleventh hour, on the eleventh month on the eleventh day.

The Royal British Legion co-ordinated the events taking place at the Market Cross. Staff from local retailers and the banks came out, joining shoppers on the street to observe the silence.

In Hengate Gardens pupils from and Primary School took part in a special assembly and were joined by key members from East Yorkshire of Council, including the leader OBE.

Matthew Snowden from Longcroft School also attended, laying a wreath on behalf of the school for former pupil Sergeant Michael Lockett MC who was killed in action while serving in Afghanistan.

Suzane Menzies-Baird from local nursery Hectors House also attended with children from the nursery. She said;

“I feel it is very important that we came today, and the children can pay their respects.”

Today also sees the end the annual . Local members of the Royal British Legion will now collect up all the donation pots from the shops and are confident that 2014 has been a good year for the charity.
