Community Groups Battle For Honours In Inter-Village Games
Community groups from across the East Riding battled for the honours in the finals of an inter-village games contest.

Eight teams won their way through to the finals of the competition, organised by ’s sport, play and arts service.

Teams were all community groups set up as a result of the council’s promoting independence project, that is aimed at people over 50 and disabled adults. The groups are supported to become self-sustaining, getting together to enjoy activities including boccia (a form of bowls), new age kurling, seated aerobics, indoor archery and skittles.

There are now over 35 groups across the East Riding and teams are invited to compete in the inter-village games which are now in their fourth year.

The teams who took part in the finals held at Beverley Leisure complex were Market Weighton Wonders and Market Weighton Wolves, Keyingham Baddies and Keyingham Goodies, Skidby Bakers, Skirlaugh and Tickton Tiger Lilies. The Kirk Ella Comrades also won their way through to the finals.

The honours went to the Market Weighton Wonders, with Skidby Bakers in second place, and Keyingham Goodies in third.

Samantha James, rural community sports coach, said: “It was a fantastic event – the groups are getting to know each other and although it is competitive there is always a very friendly atmosphere.”
