New Online Resource Launched For Yorkshire Family History

A major new online resource for Yorkshire family has just been launched. Parish records of baptisms, marriages and burials dating back to the 16th century from across Yorkshire are being published online for the first time.

The Yorkshire Collection at findmypast.co.uk will be available free for all East Riding residents at the Treasure House in Beverley and at all East Riding libraries.

The first phase of this landmark project, featuring over three million parish records from archives across Yorkshire, has been released. However, parish records from the East Riding will not be available until 2015.

At the moment, East Riding residents can access records known as Bishop’s Transcripts (contemporary copies made by parish priests each year) for the whole of Yorkshire.

The project is still ongoing, and on completion will be the most comprehensive online repository of Yorkshire family history records anywhere in the world.
Councillor Richard Burton, said:

“This is a major pioneering project for our archives team to be part of, and it is truly exciting for the East Riding to ultimately be a part of something so significant for archives services across Yorkshire.”

Lizzy Baker, public services archivist at the East Riding Archives, said:

“It is an incredibly exciting time for our team that has been working closely with Find My Past on what is an innovative project, not just for the East Riding but for Yorkshire as a whole.”

“Once all our parish records are online next year. They will give more than ever before a truly unique insight into their Yorkshire roots and the social history of the East Riding.”
