Residents Urged To Register To Vote Under New Electoral Registration System

East Riding residents are being urged to ensure they are registered to vote under a new electoral registration system.

The new system, called Individual Electoral Registration (IER), is being introduced nationally and means that every individual in a household is now responsible for their own voter registration.

This is a change from the previous system under which the head of each household was responsible for registering everyone who lived at an address.

Residents now need to include more details when registering, including National Insurance number and date of Birth, to make the electoral register more secure.

Registration can now also be carried out online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Letters explaining the change will be sent out to all residents in the East Riding between the end of July and the end of August.

Most who are already registered to vote will be registered automatically under the new system, and they will not need to do anything.

These people will be sent a letter confirming they have been registered to vote automatically.

However, some people may need to take action to join the new register, and the council’s team is writing to those people to tell them whether they need to take action.

Residents are urged to respond to this letter, if asked to. A registration form and envelope will be provided with the letter.

Those who do not respond and are not included on the updated electoral register risk not being able to vote in the future.

Councillor Margaret Chadwick, portfolio holder for council support services, said: “This is the biggest change to the electoral registration system in nearly 100 years, and East Riding residents need to be aware of these changes.

“The letters that will be sent out shortly will explain the changes fully, and I would urge all those affected to respond to their letter as soon as possible to make sure they are registered to vote in the future.”

The new system was introduced by the Government through the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013.
