Faraday Challenge : Beverley Grammar Students Get A Lesson In Engineering

Students from got their chance to take part in the Faraday Challenge, an event organised by Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Challenge Leader Dr K Sewell led the project that involved six teams made up of six students tackle an engineering problem.

Dr Sewell said;

“We have held 18 events in Yorkshire through June and July with the idea being to encourage and stimulate interest in engineering.”

“The Faraday Challenge simulates a real-life engineering project. Students select their own project manager and allocate other job roles to other five members of their group.”

“As a team they have to solve a complex problem while working to timescale and also to a stict budget that they need buy the tools and components required to complete their task.”

The Faraday Challenge gives students the opportunity to research, design and build prototype solutions to genuinely tough engineering problems and lets students be creative and use their own problem-solving skills to explore their capabilities as engineers.

Dr Sewell added;

“Some of the key skills the students get to use by taking part in this project include, team work, product design, presentation skills and a chance to get hands-on experience of modeling softer and 3D printing.”

“Another big part of the challenge is that they have to work under pressure, basically replicating a real life working environment that engineers face.”

William Beckwith who is in Year 7 Beverley Grammar School and took part in the challenge said;

“I have an interest in engineering and today was really good and very enjoyable.”

“Having never seen or used a 3D printer worked it was quite amazing to see it actually make a product. I thought it would print out an image so shocked to see an actual product be printed.”

There was a prize up for grabs for the winning team, a voucher for a one-hour taster session at the National Centre in Manchester, but the real winner was engineering and for William, he just wants the school to get their own 3D Printer!
