Organised Walks Are A Great Social Occasion Says Local John Wheelhouse

John Wheelhouse is just one of many local who attend and take part in walks held in Beverley that are run by the council to promote healthy living.

For the past four years John has taken part in local organised walks and today fresh off the back of a 45-minute walk I caught up with him, Adrian Ramsdale and Geoff Young at Beverley Leisure Centre to try to learn a bit more about why they have the walking bug.

This week the three gents along with Adam Gibson from East Riding of Yorkshire Council tackled a 45-minute walk from the Beverley Leisure Centre which took them along the Beverley Beck and back again.

All the guys who took part say going for these walks is a good social occasion for them, they walk in pairs and have a good natter while also boosting their fitness and self-well being.

John said;

“These walks take us to places we would never go. We get to see parts of Beverley we have not seen as we often cut through snickets on our routes.”

“I don’t just walk in Beverley. I take part in other walks the council organise in Cottingham, but they have them in and other places nearby.”

“Getting out is good and it is nice to catch up with people while getting fit. It is not a new thing for me; I have been coming for four years now as it helps keep me active.”

“A good friend of mine once said four walls is a house, if you are not careful it is a prison. He was right that is why it’s important to get out of the house.”

John added;

“They started running these walks to try to reduce the amount of people who were sat in the doctor’s waiting room, and they have proven to be very popular. We only had a few of us today but on the longer walks you will often see 30 or so people taking part.”

“The shorter walks are ideal for beginners as they help you build strength and fitness and help prepare you for the longer distances. No matter what distance you do it is a great social occasion.”

Taking part in the walks is free and those who take part are given a free drink in the coffee shop at afterwards.

It’s clear these walks provide a more than a way of getting fit to the people taking part. The social side is clearly important to all the of them.

East Riding of Yorkshire council’s Sport, Play and Arts Service introduced the new 45-minute walk in Beverley to ‘bridge the gap’ from the 30-minute walk to a one-hour walk.

The new 45-minute walk will be held on the third Wednesday of every month, the next one being on 16th July.

Adam, East Riding Community Sports Coach and walk leader said;

“Walking is a great way to get exercise, get some fresh air and meet new people. The new 45-minute walk finds that middle ground between the 30-minute walk being too easy and the one-hour walk which is faster paced, being too intense.”

“This walk will be of low intensity and is a great opportunity to get some exercise whilst getting a glimpse of the local surroundings.”
