We Should Be Knocking Off Scores Like That Without Losing 8 Wickets Says Sam Welburn

Beverley Town Cricket Club 3rd XI secured a full 30 points from a close-fought and sporting game with South Holderness at the Norwood Recreation Ground.

Skipper Sam Welburn although happy with the win voiced his concerns about how hard his side made of winning the game, he said;

“We should be knocking off scores like that without losing 8 wickets, all the batsman got starts but they need to start going onto get 40 plus rather than getting out for 20.”

“That said it was another good win, but we should be making these games easier on ourselves.”

Hedon batted first and struggled to 10 for 2 against opening bowlers Brad Dobson and Kieran O’Brian, the latter claiming the wickets with an excellent spell of late swing bowling.

(68) and Riley (45) brought about a recovery despite captain Sam Welburn’s 4 for 54 and O’Brian’s 2 for 36.

Several spilled catches and a generally untidy fielding display allowed the visitors to close on a respectable but not insurmountable 189 for 6.

Youthful opening pair and Kieran Simpson gave Town a steady start, Fish going on to make 29, latterly in the company of Alex Nightingale (20) but Town fell to 75 for 3.

Two wickets were lost with the total on 94 and at 107 for 6 in the 33rd over Town were if not in trouble, looking shaky.

Chris Charles, no doubt spurred on by his part in the run out , scored a half century for the first time this season, showing a combination of sound defence and some big hitting.

He was given valuable support by James Emery (15) who looked in complete control until he was well caught.

Charles was eventually pinned leg before, for a very well made 70, going for another boundary before Will Smith (15 no) and O’Brian, with two boundaries, saw Town over the line with just one over to spare.

Commenting on Charles batting performance the skipper said;

“It was good to see Charlo go and get some runs although I’m not sure if running out the in form batsman is the way to do it but I think he made it up to Fordon after the game with a few beers.”

The win means Beverley remain in third place in the table, next weekend they face second placed Sutton-On-Hull who are unbeaten this season.
